JELLYWATCH PROGRAM

In 2014, the MPA has been included among the observation points of the Jellywatch program conducted by CIESM.

The program aims to monitor in time and space the occurrence of jellyfish blooms, which was rare until the 1980s but became over time increasingly frequent in coastal waters, and it represents now a risk factor for the balance and health of the sea and of the fishery resources.

The CIESM Jellywatch Program was set up to gather the first geographical and temporal data on the frequency and outbreaks of jellyfish throughout the Mediterranean, allowing an impartial assessment of the importance, in terms of frequency and areas involved, of these mass invasions, with a view to carrying out a time-trend analysis and short-term prediction of the jellyfish blooming.
