The Rescue Centre for marine turtles of the “Egadi Islands” MPA, managed in collaboration with the environmental associations WWF Italia and Legambiente onlus, has its headquarters in the semibasement plan of the impressive Palazzo Florio, a Liberty and neo-Gothic residence owned by the Municipality of Favignana and located in the heart of the city centre, near the harbor.
It was realized with the contribution of the Ministry for the Environment together with the Italian Fund for Biodiversity, promoted by Federparchi thanks to the sponsor Co.Ge.Di, and with the contribution of Bolton Alimentari s.p.a. group.
The Centre is being strengthened to be transformed into a true Rescue Centre within the project LIFE+12 Tartalife, funded by the European Commission whose Egadi Islands MPA is partner.
The Centre, open all year round since September 2015, is operational for the hospitality and care of specimens of marine turtles in critical conditions. The specimens are those recovered in the maritime compartments of Trapani and Mazara del Vallo, then referred to the Centre for treatment.
Within the premises, besides an area entirely dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of marine turtles, the facility has also a small area dedicated to guided tours, in which the interested visitors are provided with basic notions on the biology and ecology of marine turtles as well as on the best practices to follow in case you sight and/or recover a specimen in need of saving. Through the funding of the Tartalife European project, the Centre will become a real Rescue Centre within 2018.
For advice, info or bookings of guided tours, please contact our 24-hour dedicated number “SOS Tarta” 328.3155313 or the AMP offices at 0923.921659, or write an e-mail to sostarta@ampisoleegadi.it and info@ampisoleegadi.it.
THE PROJECT
In 2011, the Marine Protected Area “Egadi Islands”, the Municipality of Favignana as Managing body, and the environmental associations WWF Italia onlus and Legambiente onlus signed an agreement by which they undertake to cooperate in carrying out activities aimed at the environmental protection, including the creation of a Rescue Centre for Marine Turtles in the island of Favignana, co-managed according to the expertise and experience in the sector of each, in order to overcome a shortage in the Province of Trapani and create a point of reference on the territory as far as it concerns the care and recovery of animals in need of saving.
The project aims to create a network of professionalism and to establish a reliable and standardized protocol, based on the information contained in the current regulations and in the guidelines drawn by ISPRA, that enable the care and rehabilitation of sea turtle specimens in need of saving and their subsequent reintegration into the sea.
The general objective is to contribute to the protection of sensitive species such as marine turtles, by intervening on specimens in critical conditions.
The project, realized on the island of Favignana, was born in order to overcome the lack of similar structures in the province of Trapani and thus guarantee timely intervention and rescue. Shortening distances and providing more immediate assistance results in a greater chance of success and consequently increases the survival rate of specimens.
