NATURA 2000 NETWORK SITES (SCI-SCZ-ZPS)

The land areas of the three islands forming the Egadi archipelago are characterized by the presence of three Special Conservation Zones (SCZ), which are regulated by the Community Directive no. 43 of May 21st 1992 (92/43/EEC) on the conservation of natural and semi-natural habitats and wild fauna and flora, also known as “Habitat Directive”, implemented in Italy by Decree of the President of the Republic n. 357 of September 8th 1997, and they are:

  • ITA010002 Island of Marettimo (SCZ)
  • ITA010003 Island of Levanzo (SCZ)
  • ITA010004 Island of Favignana (SCZ)

The entire Marine Protected Area coincides with the Site of Community Importance (SCI) ITA010024 “Seabeds of the Egadi Islands”, and it also largely comprises the Special Protection Zone (SPZ) ITA 010027 Egadi Archipelago – pursuant to the Directive n. 409 of April 2nd 1979 (79/409 / EEC) known as the Birds Directive - and the IBA (Important Bird and Biodiversity Area) IT157 "Egadi Islands".

According to the Community legislation, all territorial, urban and sector plans, including agricultural plans falling within the SCI/SCZ/SPZ area, should be subject to "Impact Assessment".
All actions that may have significant impact on the site itself, either individually or in conjunction with other interventions, are also subject to impact assessment. The Impact Assessment is governed by Art. 6 of Presidential Decree of March 12th 2003, n.120 (Official Gazette No. 124 of May 30th , 2003) and subsequent amendments replacing article 5 of the Presidential Decree of September 8th 1997, no. 357, and by the regional legislation in force.
