SECURITY NOP 2013
A new technological project on non-invasive video surveillance, proposed by the Ministry for the Environment under the Security National Operational Programme (NOP) 2013 for the protection of the environmental heritage, got the green light. Fourteen marine areas belonging to the 4 regions of Convergence Objective will be monitored and protected against environmental crimes. Thanks to a € 16.2 million euros funding, it will be possible to install smart - fixed and mobile - video-surveillance systems in the marine areas of Capo Rizzuto (Calabria), Regno di Nettuno, Gaiola, Baia and Punta Campanella (Campania), Capo Gallo-Isola delle Femmine, Ustica, Cyclops Islands, Plemmirio, Pelagian Islands, Tremiti Islands, Porto Cesareo, Torre Guaceto (Apulia) and, of course, in our archipelago. In addition, a monitoring operational room will be created. These monitoring/surveillance stations will be able to interact with the Data Processing Centre of the Information System for the Environmental Protection managed by the Environmental Protection Carabinieri Station. Besides the Environmental Protection Carabinieri Station, the project will involve the Municipalities managing the Marine Protected Areas, the harbourmaster's offices and the State Forestry Corps. The initiative is part of the Operational Objective 1.3 of the Security National Operational Programme (NOP) "Protecting the Environmental Context" and aims to prevent widespread offences to the detriment of the marine and coastal environment such as poaching, discharge of waste at sea and uncontrolled sand extraction. Besides this, strengthening the system of prevention means increasing information and raising people awareness on the importance of environmental protection.
