AGREEMENT BETWEEN MPA AND UNIPA

The Municipality of Favignana, Managing Body of the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area, has recently established collaborations with several departments of the University of Palermo.

  • The Egadi Islands MPA and the University of Palermo - Departments of Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Chemical Technologies, Automatic and Mathematical Models. The Agreement aims to realize technologically innovative solutions for the monitoring of the marine environment, the protection of the natural and archaeological heritage and the safety of the environment of the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area.
  • The Egadi Islands MPA and the University of Palermo. The Agreement provides for cooperation between the two Bodies in order to promote and implement initiatives and projects aimed at the study and monitoring of the marine ecosystem.
  • The Egadi Islands MPA and STEBICEF. The Agreement aims at the promotion and implementation of activities and projects for research and monitoring, as well as for the protection and enhancement of the landscape and of the environmental assets.

"ENVIRONMENTAL ACCOUNTING" PROJECT

In 2012 the "Egadi Islands" MPA joined the ISEA project promoted by the Ministry for the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea and Federparchi, which provided for the implementation of ISEA Standardized Management Plans in each Italian marine protected area, aimed at gathering all necessary data for the realization of a naturalistic report as well as identifying the direct and indirect impacts in each area taken into account.

In 2014, a Federparchi working group, in collaboration with other Universities, Research Bodies and external subjects, and on behalf of the Ministry for the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea, drafted the document "A project idea of Environmental Accounting in the Italian Marine Protected Areas" which was intended to implement a system of environmental accounting based on the assessment of the value, also economic, of the environmental heritage of each area as well as of the flow changes that maintain such heritage.

In the light of this initiative, the MPA developed a project of "environmental accounting" aimed at gathering information on the environmental heritage present in the territory and at assessing both its economic value and any prospective impacts, with a view to improving the management processes.

The activity was carried out in 2015 with the support of the University of Palermo (DiSTEM), which performed the preliminary knowledge activities (phase zero), and continued in 2016, in line with what had already been done, in collaboration with CoNISMa.

 

Survey "COLLECTION OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC DATA ON PROFESSIONAL FISHING IN THE EGADI ISLANDS MARINE PROTECTED AREA

In July 2015, the Egadi Islands MPA launched a project in collaboration with the fishing cooperative company CSR and under the scientific supervision of Mazara del Vallo IAMC-CNR UOS, aiming to acquire qualitative and quantitative statistic information on the catches of fish made by professional fishing within the Egadi Islands MPA.

This initiative goes in as a preparatory activity for the establishment of an environmental-ethical certification by possibly creating a label of the fishery products obtained by professional fishing in the MPA and caught by means of fishing systems which comply with rules more stringent than the sectoral legislation and which, therefore, are sustainable.

 

MONITORING OF RECREATIONAL FISHING

As part of the Marine Strategy's objectives, the MPA, on the initiative of the Ministry for the Environment, has launched a program for monitoring recreational fishing in the MPA.

The survey - comprising both a statistic survey, for the processing of information related to the authorizations issued by the Managing Body, and a field survey, in which the staff of the Body performs sample monitoring directly at sea - aims to characterize recreational fishing and to make an estimate of the existing typologies, the catches and the type of user by means of aggregate analysis carried out for statistical purposes.
