JELLYRISK
The MED Jellyrisk project, conducted between 2013 and 2015, which involved the MPA as an associate partner, brought together many partners from several Mediterranean countries (Italy, Spain, Malta, Israel), with CoNISMa as the lead one.
This was a network made up of universities, protected areas, local authorities and groups of citizens, in order to create new tools for quantifying, preventing and mitigating the environmental and health risks of the continuous proliferation of jellyfish in 10 selected coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. The increasingly frequent jellyfish occurrence represents a continual threat to the marine environment all over the world, the cause of which is primarily due to human activities, affecting among others the climate change.
The project provided for the placement in the Egadi, in 3 sites on the island of Favignana, in 2014 and 2015, of special anti-jellyfish nets, in order to protect the beaches frequented by bathers. Other activities were the installation of information panels and the distribution of information and educational material on jellyfish and the project.
