STATISTICAL SURVEY FOR THE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERIZATION OF PROFESSIONAL FISHING IN THE EGADI
The CSR fishing cooperative of Trapani, with the technical-scientific supervision of the IAMC (“Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costierio” –Institute for Marine and Coastal Environment)-CNR (“Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche” -National Research Council)-UOS (“Unità Organizzativa di Sede” -Headquarters Organizational Unit) of Mazara del Vallo, implemented between 2015 and 2016, on behalf of the MPA, a project aimed at acquiring useful information in order to characterize, in terms of quality and quantity, the professional fishing practiced in the MPA.
This project is part of a wider plan conceived by the Management body for the creation of a fishing label to help contradistinguish on the sales counters the ethical products resulting from sustainable fishing, and therefore add value to the catch of fish in the Marine Protected Area.
The statistical survey was in fact propaedeutic, with a view to learning more in detail about the quantity and the specific diversity of the local fishery product, and so guiding the concrete quality-related actions that need to be taken according to the local needs and opportunities.
The analysis was carried out on a sample of 16 boats, statistically representative of the sailors who operate predominantly at the Egadi (Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo, Trapani) throughout the whole year as well as of the types of fishing practiced there (passive gear, longline fishing, seiners and trawl nets), with the collaboration of professional fishermen who helped gather information by means of periodical surveys on the commercial catch of fish (target species and waste). Surveys were carried out upon landing of the fish with a view to collecting data on the type of fishing and on the lengths and weights of the species, as well as reconstructing fish catches, in quantitative and qualitative terms, according to gear, fishing area and seasonality.
