Volunteer Camps

The Marine Protected Area "Egadi Islands” aims at promoting environmental education and dissemination of knowledge of marine and coastal environments, also through the implementation of environmental protection and volunteering initiatives, in collaboration with environmental associations present in the territory.

In 2011, together with the Municipality of Favignana, the MPA signed an agreement with two of the major environmental associations, WWF onlus and Legambiente onlus, also aimed at the promotion and implementation of environmental educational activities.

In recent years, in collaboration with the local associations Legambiente Egadi and Libera, several volunteer camps have been organized, whose participants from all over Italy contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the territory, in this case the Egadi, also seeking to raise awareness on the local community they come in contact with. Thanks to the volunteer camps, among the other activities carried out in the island of Favignana, the path leading to the fort of S. Caterina was cleaned, the Cala grande “lever well” was reclaimed and the coasts cleared from waste coming from the sea or abandoned on the land. Everything done in the utmost respect for the environment, using such zero emission vehicles as bicycles. The MPA takes an active part in the work of the volunteers and organizes meetings to make them familiarize with the marine protected area, with its own beauties and peculiarities.
