Anti-Trawling
The Municipality of Favignana, Managing Body of the Marine Protected Area of the “Egadi Islands”, carried out the project M.A.S.T.E.R (Misure Anti Strascico per la Tutela e il Ripopolamento - Anti Trawling Measures for the Protection and the Repopulation/restocking) aimed at the protection of native species and Posidonia Oceanica from illegal trawling, and at the repopulation and the preservation of fish species.
The projects consists in positioning, around the coasts of the three main islands (Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo) a series of stop/net bollards made of ecofriendly artificial structure and designed to counter trawling within the areas where such activity is forbidden.
The project was modular. In 2013, the first 72 anti-trawling structures were positioned within the 50 metre isobath, around the islands of Favignana and Marettimo, contributing to the protection of the marine ecosystem and, in particular, of the Posidonia Oceanica meadows, priority habitats within the SCI"Seabeds of the Egadi Islands Archipelago" (ITA 010024), in some parts partially degraded by trawl fishing.
In 2015, thanks to the sponsoring of the Bolton Alimentari spa group, a further enhancement of the intervention was made through the placement of another 40 stop/net bolards around the coasts of Levanzo and Marettimo. The structures, once positioned, are subject to scientific studies and constant environmental monitoring activity in order to verify their effectiveness.
